My very cliche 2013 resolutions post

I originally had these wrapped into a bigger, longer, awesomer blog post, but, as it turns out, I couldn’t seem to get the message focused. So, I’ve ripped them out and put them here (#IDoWhatIWant).

So, in no particular order, here are some 2013 resolutions – some of which are my own and some of which I hope to bestow unto you, my friends, family, colleagues, readers, etc:

  • Drink more water. Seriously. All that coffee is going to rip your stomach apart. No one wants that.
  • Don’t think you have to go to the gym everyday and be over the top muscular or crazy skinny to be happy. It won’t make you happy. Be happy about who you are.
  • That being said, if you are unhappy about who you are: go to the gym, eat healthier, stop smoking, smile once in a while, OK?
  • Call your mother. She worries.
  • Let go of the past. Some of that is just too heavy to carry where you’re going.
  • Stay in one weekend a month and put that money into a saving account, CD, IRA, shoe box. You’re going to be happy you did. #SplishSplash
  • Write more.
  • Talk to strangers.
  • Explore. I don’t care if it’s going a different route home from work or moving to another part of the country, do it. Bonus points for exploring the Bay Area. #LookMeUpIfYouDo
  • Floss.
  • Follow your heart, regardless of circumstance and consequence. One of the very last things I did in Connecticut was follow my heart right back to where it all began. It didn’t go the way I thought it would or the way I wanted it to, but I followed my heart right up that driveway. Somewhere deep inside, I hope she knows that.
  • Set goals. Right them down. Seriously. Right now. #ItWorks
  • Go outside.
  • Overdress. Because you’re awesome and everyone should know that.
  • Laugh.
  • Make inappropriate jokes at inappropriate times and laugh inappropriately loudly at them.
  • Be curious.
  • Don’t be afraid to fail at something. The most successful people, so I’ve been told, have failed a whole lot. Which is awesome, because I like to think I’m right on pace to be the most successful person ever because of the amount of failures I’ve piled up. Don’t let failure stop you.
  • Did you right down those goals yet?
  • Be honest with yourself about what you want and who you are. Are you really going to live your life acting like YOU don’t know who YOU are and what YOU want? Don’t kid yourself, especially if you’re a kidder. That’s some meta stuff you don’t even want to get into with me.
  • Count your blessings.
  • Let go of resentment. Forgive.
  • Take risks. Bet on yourself, go all-in. You’re the safest bet you could ever make because you are solely invested in making that bet pay off. Don’t let yourself down.
  • Breathe.
  • Don’t like your job? Find a new one. Stop reading right now and find a new one.
  • Like your job? Find areas where you can improve. Or find ways that you can help others you work with improve.
  • Volunteer. The best thing I ever did was volunteer to coach youth basketball for two years back home with my friends. It’s a truly rewarding experience.
  • Do something that absolutely scares the shit out of you.
